Four exhibitions, four temporary galleries, one neighborhood connected by one visiting artist, one October weekend inviting reflection on hospitality and closeness

There is a stranger arriving from Wrocław to Budweis, Filip Kopeć. He has never before set foot in South Bohemia. He arrives in an unfamiliar landscape, where people speak a language he doesn't understand. Here he meets people he has never known, who nonetheless chose to open their doors to him. The gestures of an open door, a handshake, a welcome, become the starting point of their shared inquiry into what it means today to trust someone enough to invite them into your home. what rituals we attach to hospitality, and how we even go about creating closeness in a time when we seem to grow ever more foreign to one another.
In exchange for that trust, he brings into these homes his paintings and sculptures, made from abandoned materials found in the streets of the Prague Suburb. With these, he tells a story of the invisible, of things we have forgotten, things that have slipped through the sieve of our attention.

At the start of October, the Neighbourhood Gallery Weekend will open galleries where you'd least expect them: in living rooms, gardens, front yards, shared apartment stairwells. Places where art has always, alongside the traditional gallery, had its own quiet home. Paintings on walls, sculptures, photographs, textile art, and other artistic forms help shape the feeling of home and tell our personal histories. What interests us is the moment when such a personal space opens outward, when home and art can become a meeting place, an act of trust made visible, a moment in which we truly see one another.

Over the course of one weekend, you can visit four thematically connected galleries, get to know people in your own neighborhood, or think together with us about what closeness and hospitality mean today.

ABOUT THE VISITING ARTIST

Filip Kopeć, born in 1998, lives and works in Wrocław, Poland. He studied in the painting studio of the Wrocław Academy of Fine Arts and completed a postgraduate program in art therapy at the University of Lower Silesia. Though oil painting remains his primary medium, he doesn't confine himself to it, often combining painting with collage or installations made of found objects. His long-standing interests center on the capacity of all living forms to resist power and manipulation, and on themes of emancipation and social justice.

MAGIC CARPETS

The Neighbourhood Gallery Weekend is part of the European project Magic Carpets, which seeks to involve the public in artistic processes, build community events, and support young artists.

The name Magic Carpets refers to “1001 Arabian Nights” fairy-tale story about the magic, or flying, carpet – a 'fantastic device' for travelling across the world in a twinkling of an eye. The creativity and imagination of Scheherazade used in story-telling to intrigue and to involve her husband becomes here a convincing metaphor of the power of culture to change the mistrust and confrontation into a mutual understanding, respect and curiosity we can have for each other.
