Inspiration from Slavonice

Third inspirational meeting within the Creative Minds project, which connects art and education, took place on Wednesday, October 22, at the Community House in Slavonice.

The aim of our gatherings is to support the connection of everyone involved in creative learning across the South Bohemian Region, whether freelancers or those working in institutions (cultural, community-based, libraries, or in non-formal education). Beyond sharing experiences and discovering new places, the broader intention of these meetings is to lay the groundwork for a joint program or activities for the title year 2028.

During the meeting, we were given a tour of the Community House by its director, Olga Žampová. We learned about the history of its restoration and the vision of the group behind its transformation. Today, the house serves primarily as a place for education, culture, and community life. We also talked about its broader role in a small town and within the landscape of the Czech border region. We drew inspiration from concrete examples, including topics such as architecture and cultural heritage.

The program also included a cyanotype workshop – a historical photographic technique in which we used daylight (in our case even the overcast kind) to create the technique’s characteristic blue prints of natural materials on fabric. This technique was not just a creative activity for us; we also used it as a tool for unconventional reflection on the surroundings of the place and on the map of Slavonice.

More about the Community House Slavonice

The Community House Slavonice is an open cultural, educational, and community space located in the historic center of Slavonice. It provides facilities for local associations and brings together people of all generations. The public benefit organization that owns and operates the house hosts a variety of programs — lectures, concerts, exhibitions, film screenings, and creative workshops — on topics such as architecture, history, the environment, art, and civil society. It also runs a Parent Center and offers family support services as well as food assistance.

The Community House Slavonice was saved and restored with the aim of revitalizing public space, city life, and the wider region, and of supporting open dialogue on contemporary issues. The building itself is an award-winning example of modern architecture.
