OPEN CALL | Art in Public Space 2026 (KARAS+KVART, Zagreb, Croatia)

The Croatian Association of Fine Artists (HDLU) announces an open call for young artists to participate in a residency and creative project as part of the KARAS+KVART program. This project is part of the European network CreArt 3.0 and will culminate in the creation of a new work of art or intervention in the public space around the Karas Gallery in Zagreb, Croatia.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The KARAS+KVART program supports collaboration between one local artist and one international artist, who spend three weeks exploring the gallery's surroundings and, at the end of 2026, present the resulting work to the public in the urban district surrounding the gallery.

This year, artist Vana Gaćina was selected to propose the FluctuHood project. It focuses on sustainable bio-refineries and issues of energy accessibility and the transformation of local ecological materials (e.g., bio-waste, wastewater, solar energy) into an interactive and energy-self-sufficient installation.

WHO IS THE CALL FOR?

The call is open to:

  • Younger generation artists born or living in cities involved in the CreArt 3.0 project, including:
    • Kaunas (Lithuania), Liepaja (Latvia), Skopje (North Macedonia), Aveiro (Portugal), Valladolid (Spain), Lublin (Poland), Venice (Italy), Clermont-Ferrand & Rouen (France), České Budějovice (Czech Republic), Oulu (Finland), Regensburg (Germany)
  • Ukrainian artists through cooperation with the Lviv Artistic Council "Dialog".

WHAT THE CALL OFFERS

The organizer provides:

  • Three weeks' accommodation during the residency (May 2026)
  • Travel expenses to and from the location up to EUR 400
  • Artist's fee: EUR 1,200 (gross)
  • Daily allowance: EUR 30/day
  • Budget for the realization of the work: EUR 5,000 (gross)

After the end of the stay, it is necessary to submit a brief report on the artwork created and to cooperate with the CreArt project in promoting it.

  • registration on the CreArt website with your portfolio
  • a copy of your ID card or passport
  • a cover letter (max. 500 words)
  • a project proposal on one A4 page
  • a CV in English
  • a portfolio of your work (PDF up to 7 MB)

DATES

🗓️ Application deadline: February 28, 2026
🗓️ Announcement of results: by March 15, 2026
🗓️ Signing of the contract: approximately 2 weeks before departure
🗓️ Submission of the report from the stay: within 1 week after its completion
